The bastion of Dark Prog in Italy continues to inspire and amaze with the homegrown talent it plucks and presents. Judging by the gatefold sleeve and bespoke booklet, the band is comprised of relatively young musicians. Their collective backgrounds unknown. On this, their debut album, in true Italian Prog tradition, they embarked on the humble task of writing a soundtrack to the “1984” literary masterpiece by Orwell. Having not read the novel in at least fifteen years and lacking a firm grasp of their native tongue, it is very difficult to gauge just how true to the text the album has been shaped. Certainly some of the song titles provide hints. But no matter. This soundtrack is so thoroughly dark, diverse and enjoyable the music tells its own story. Split into thirteen chapters, if you like, the nine on the first side vary in length between almost two and four minutes. The remaining tracks on the reverse are generally longer. “Processo di Omologazione” clocks in well over twelve minutes and “La Stanza 101” approximately half that again. But really, these specifics may be a little immaterial as the pull, flow and ambience conjure a cohesive whole beyond conventional stand alone tracks. The emphasis must be placed on subtle composition with classic instrumentation, moogs, organs and a captivating male voice. The tapestry should appeal to those who enjoyed the narrative of “Der Golem” LP or “Our Lady of the Bones” DLP by Il Segno Del Comando and Malombra respectively, albeit less gothic and strange in finish. The record might even appeal to Rush fans with any appreciation for the Italian tradition. Just don’t be too taken aback by the introductory sweep. The harsh blow promptly dissolves into classical hues so sit back, follow the lyrics and let the magic unfold…
